The Fourth Month

Your baby, who has been staying a newborn tender creature for you, although the newborn period comes to its end by the beginning of the second month of his life, acquires a new status, revealing new skills every day. You realize that your baby grows, and it becomes noticeable not only because he gains weight, bur because his moving activity, communication skills, world perception become different as well.
A new person, individuality is developing, and it is you who plays the most valuable role in your child’s character and personality formation.

Look attentively at your baby’s hair. This is the period, when its colour and quality become different. It is quite possible that you paid no attention, but your little one has been losing his first hair (tender thin and curly) with which he arrived during last several weeks; and instead of it new hair grows. This process will take one or even two months. Eyes colour changes as well. if our baby arrived with blue eyes, it is right now that his eyes will become darker, and in a while your little son or daughter will become hazel – eyed, as you are. And only if the blue colour of his eyes stays with your baby up to the age of six months, you may hope that it will never get changed.
Babies, born from dark – eyed parents usually have light – hazel eyes up to the age of four months, when their eyes become as dark as their parents’

Physical Development
As a rule any baby keeps gaining weight. If you have a possibility to control how much weight does he gain, you will notice that it is about 140 – 170    g. per week. During the fourth month of his life baby’s body mass usually becomes 600 – 750 bigger. But you should remember that these indexes are only approximate, as each baby has his own weight gaining tempos. Your baby becomes about 2 – 2,5 cm longer; his body gradually acquires strong, well – formed for an infant – in – arms child look; as his muscles develop and become more perfect.

Moving Activity
By the end of the fourth month your baby can manipulate his head with confidence. Lying on his belly he is able to hold it for quite a long period of time, and being in the position on his back, a baby can easily raise his head, touching his chest with his chin in order to “observe” his feet better. And yet, your little one turns his head left and right with great pleasure, looking after everything around him.

If your baby was not able to turn from his back on his belly, of vice versa last month, now he will manage to do this exercise. Yet, lying on his belly he will even be able to lean upon his forearms and to make an attempt of holding his head and chest leaned upon one of his arms in order to have his second arm free for fetching something.

Your baby’s arms keep being the most “tasty” and necessary things for him. Except sucking them during all his free time, he would bring them together in the middle line; follow them with purposeful and well – coordinated look. His fingers are not clenched any more. Baby’s hands movement coordination becomes more perfect. He can fetch a toy, hold it tightly and move it together with his arm, and then he may lose it accidentally. Keeping a toy in his hand, your little one’s eyes follow its movements he gets pleased with his luck and smiles. Baby’s own fists, fingers or rattles are “tasted” of no doubt.

During this period of his life an active legs moving in a “riding a bike” manner becomes your baby’s favorite exercise. His knees are in bended position yet, especially while sleeping, but baby tries to stretch them sometimes. Making exercises with your little child, you may notice that his legs more and bend well enough in all his joints.

If your baby is put in a vertical position, and when he has a “floor” under his feet, he would also bend and stretch his legs, as if dancing. Most babies are crazy about such “exercises”, especially if you sing or if there some rhythmical music is on.
