The Sixth Month

Feeding
Eating something becomes one of the most favourite games of your baby. If time, volume of food and your baby’s clothes neatness let you organize this game for your little baby; you should do it for him sometimes. Babies receive great pleasure from tasting of what you put on the plate! At the beginning he will taste it with his finger, than with his whole palm, and, finally, with his little mouth.
And the discovery of the mashed potato’s ability to be spread all over the table makes your little one (not you) extremely happy. The phenomenon of a juice leaving wet spots or a whole puddle becomes fascinating for a little investigator.

First Teeth
The process of teeth appearance begins during the 6th month of baby’s life as a rule. But remember, there is no exact term of the first tooth appearance. Some babies have it at the age of 4 month, other – only when they are 10 months old. It also depends on the heredity, so you may ask your parents, your husband and your relatives.

And if each baby has his own term of the first tooth appearance, the order usually does not differ. Two central teeth in mandible are the first to appear, then come two central teeth in maxilla and two neighbouring teeth after them two teeth in mandible appear.

Babies react upon their teeth appearance long (3 – 4 months) before they begin to come out. Sometimes sucking the lower lip or pulling themselves by their ears signifies the teeth appearance. It can be explained by the irritation of their jaw by the hard tooth, which comes out to the top of it. General signs of teeth appearance are the raised temperature up to 98, 6 – 100, 4 degrees F, refusing to eat, more frequent urinating, and increased salivation. But if you notice any the above mentioned signs, you should consult with your baby’s doctor, as it may also signify some serious disease. You can make the tooth appearance process easier and not so painful by purchasing some special toys, filled with cold water. Cold will calm your little one’s irritated jaws down and removes the painful feelings.

You can buy some special medicine with the local pain removing option, which lower the gums sensibility in the nearest drugstore. So, you should better get used to the situation for the nearest 2 – 2, 5 years, because the appearance of twenty’ teeth will break your family peace for a long time.

Emotions
By this time your baby realizes the whole variety of different emotions, although it happens intuitively and in a perfunctory manner so far. You should keep in mind that any quarrel or loud voice will prick up your little one’s ears of even irritate him. The general impression about the whole situation in the family is received from its members’ face expressions, intonations and tones of their voices.

It is the very period when a baby reveals the whole range of emotions. And you will not always be able to explain the reason of your little son’s or daughter’s sudden being in the sulks. But this little creature had been smiling just a few moments ago. The point is that your baby has learnt to switch over his attention from one object into another (thing, voice, etc), and every impression is expressed by some definite emotion. The range of new skills gets increased week after week.
Babies at the age of six months begin to develop their passive vocabulary. They would memorize the names of the things which you pronounce, and soon when you name these objects again, your baby will look at them.
